SA To Gov Sanwo Olu, Gives Update on Lekki Conservative Center Closure

This morning at 8 am, I was at Lekki Conservative Center (LCC) following the viral video around an impending danger. I met the DG of Nigeria Conservation Foundation (NCF), Mr. Onoja alongside the management members. I was with the dedicated members of the Ministry of Tourism and and DG of Safety Commision. We investigated the viral safety concern and saw that it has been fixed.

Quick update:

The incident causing safety concerns in the viral video occurred in December, and it was promptly fixed on the same day which is December 16, 2023. During my thorough inspection of the walkway and canopy walkway, I highlighted some NEW safety priority areas and other places to reinforce, this is aligning with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Hamzat led commitment to safety and tourism friendly environment.

DG Mr. Onoja reassured both myself and DG of Safety Commission, Mr. Lanre Omojola, of LCC’s commitment to maintaining the highest safety standards.

In response, I’ve directed the conservation center to remain closed (It has been closed to the public for maintenance since January 16. The center has tradition of yearly maintenance at the beginning of the year) until all safety concerns are addressed. The planned reopening by month-end is now suspended until first week in February, pending approval from the Ministry of Tourism and Lagos Safety Commission.

It’s crucial to note that the center has a clean safety record, with a swift response to the past incident. Yet, as a government, we’re committed to reinforcing safety measures and ensuring LCC’s accident-free streak.

We appreciate the individual who raised the alarm, the blogs and people who brought attention to it, and the Governor the deputy governor, Mr. Obafemi Hamzat for their immediate concern upon viewing the video. Safety remains our top priority, providing Lagosians with the best living environment.
