Bonfire Night At Kamp Afrika

Have you ever been to a Bonfire night at Kamp Afrika? If no, then you have to make sure you do so!

Why? That’s because it is an an experience that is right out of this world!

To start with, Kamp Afrika is a Pan African camp designed for tweens and teens (10-16 years). The objective is to expose participants to African culture, awaken their potentials, passion and values through adventure, recreation, crafts, storytelling, arts and theatre in a fun filled manner. On camp, campers meet peers with similar interests and talents where they share love of knowledge in an environment that values creativity and intelligence, while having lots of fun, making new friends and memories that will last a lifetime.

And there are different adventures ranging from sports, creative arts and crafts, music and theater. And these are structured to foster campers’ self-esteem, creative expressions, skill building, peer relationships, independence, social comfort, exploration, leadership, physical activities and true participation in a community environment.

There are activities like Kayaking, Obstacle courses and treasure hunts, Canoeing, Outdoor camping in African tents, Fishing, Horse back riding, Tree Climbing, Bonfire nights and Kite flying.

Also sports activities such as Water volleyball, Badminton, Lawn tennis, Catapulting, Archery, cycling, Beach soccer, Basketball, Swimming, Soccer, Fitness classes and Aim the bucket.

There are opportunities to learn creative arts and craft, Bead making, Tie and dyeing, Basket weaving, Broom making, Hair weaving, Cooking with an African bias, African bags, shoes and accessories making, African head gear (gele) tying, Wrapper tying, Coconut oil making, Fitness classes.

The camp creates opportunity for learning of African Drumming ( bata, gan-gan, ekwe, gbedu, konga, jembe), Stage plays, Singing, African dancing, Story telling, Standup comedy and Chanting (Ewi).

Being at Kamp Afrika is an overwhelming experience, meeting new friends, camping out at the beach, learning new things about African culture, traditions, hearing folk tales of things that happen centuries ago and sometimes decades ago and the most beautiful part of it is, being surrounded by nature. The sand, the sea, the lagoon and the forest! Everything so African. Everything so Carribbean at the same time.

And then after a day full of learning and play activities and eating, at night you dance and gyrate at the Bonfire and laugh it all out with friends. That’s the spirit of the Bonfire.

It is indeed an African setting with the moon high up in the sky, smiling at you, re-creating the moonlight night in a typical African village, where people gather to tell stories!
